Samsung’s AMOLED Technology Much Better on the Eye
AMOLED displays are designed for consumers not only because of their breathtaking appearance, but also because of they are one of the safest display technologies ever developed.
Experts tell us that the human eye typically will perceive about 80% of the information that reaches our visual sensory system. This means that digital displays are very significant, both in the long run and in our day-to-day activities.
As important as a digital display is in daily communications, we should also be aware that digital displays emit ‘blue light’ that has the potential to harm our eyes.
This is especially important with smartphone displays as the distance between our eyes and our smartphones can be quite close.
Understand that smartphone usage is more extensive than many might realize.
Based on research by the Mobile Market Research Institute, the average amount of time that people in their 20s use their smartphone is about four hours a day.
Moreover, that time frame has been continually increasing. Of course, the longer we use our smartphones, the more our eyes are exposed to the potentially damaging effects of ‘blue light’.
Let’s take a closer look at ‘Blue light’ and how best to minimize the potential for hurting our eyes.
What is Blue light?
In 2014, researchers at Gifu University in Japan announced that blue light has a negative effect on retinal cells on the human eye.
Their experiments on rats, which centered on flashing rays of various colors on their eyes, showed that the 80% of their retinal cells were subject to damage by blue light.
Due to the harmful effects that blue light can trigger, various products such as blue-light-blocking glasses, a blue light app, and a smartphone protective film have begun to appear.
Some smartphones even have a control with which to reduce the amount of blue light that they are releasing
But first let’s be clear that blue light is not the same as blue-ray.
Blue-ray light has a wavelength between 380~500 nanometers (nm), which is within the range of light that human eyes can visibly detect. But, the fact that the color is blue doesn’t necessarily mean that the light is harmful.
Based on results of experiments presented for a thesis published by UPMC (University in France), the wavelength that can harm human retinal cells is only between 415~455nms, and this light can actually impact our vision sooner than we realize.
With this concern in mind, we must ask if there is any way that the potentially detrimental blue light can be reduced in the electronic devices that we use.
Samsung Display’s AMOLED has come up with an answer that will interest everyone.
AMOLED Blue Light cut in Half
Samsung Display uses leading-edge AMOLED technology that minimizes the blue light emitted from a display.
As a result of the company’s constant efforts to improve AMOLED technology, the potentially problematic blue light coming out of a Samsung AMOLED display is now half as much as that from most conventional LCD displays.
This is possible thanks to a self-illuminating technology within Samsung AMOLED displays.
Samsung Display’s AMOLED can block potentially harmful blue light by reducing the illumination of wavelengths between 415 to 455nm while increasing the illumination of safer wavelengths nearby.
Due to the outstanding capability of Samsung AMOLED displays to protect our eyes, in 2016, Samsung received a certification of ‘Safety for Eyes’ from VDE, a widely recognized international certification authority in Germany, after passing VDE’s blue light testing.
